October 11, 1919 - October 30, 2011

Granny went to be with the Lord on Sunday morning October 30. We are sad to not have her in our lives, but thankful to know that she is with the Lord. Honestly words cannot describe this amazing woman of God and I won't even try. Her obituary is very well written. Please read if you have time.

I have cried tears of joy every time I think about the Lord welcoming her into his kingdom. I also like to think of these two together again.

This was the sunset on the night that Granny died. Mom said she has never seen a prettier sunset.

We are heading down to Fort Walton Beach tonight to attend her services tomorrow. Prayers are appreciated for our family as we grieve together. Nonetheless, it will be a special time for our family to be together.

Poo Poo Nightmare Part II

So... all day Mac had the "poop" look. A few times I caught him running off to a corner (to poop in peace, I'm sure). We made him sit on the potty numerous times today with no luck. It's so frustrating when we KNOW he has to go, but he refuses to. Well tonight I decided that to take Mac on a date. We went to see Puss In Boots and then to Chickfila to eat and play. He was very excited when we got to Chickfila b/c he knew he'd get to play in the play area. While I ate he was making very funny hip action movements in his seat. Then he laid down in the booth for a good 7 or 8 minutes. By this time I knew what he was doing. But if he had to go all day, then I knew he needed to get it out. He confessed to what he'd done and we went to the bathroom. I put him up on the baby changing station to make things easier. I started to clean him up and then a look of terror came over his face. I knew he had to go again so what else could I do but tell him to "just go". I turned away for a second to give him some privacy. When I turned back around there was not only a huge terd laying there but a lot of pee on the floor and on his bag that was also on the floor. I forgot that pee pee usually comes simultaneously with poo poo. So I cleaned him and the bathroom up as best I could and we walked out of Chickfila with what dignity we had left. A couple stared at us while we left. I think the girl must have been in the bathroom during the fiasco. Home we went and in the bath he went.

Potty training moms, this is for you: Took Mac to the park. When we got there, I asked him if he needed to go poo poo and told him if he went in his pants then we were going home (yes this has happened before). He was looking pretty "antsy" so I took him to the bathroom where he refused to poo poo but tee teed on outside of pull up somehow. Took pull up off. Went back out to park (commando) and then saw him hiding, about to "go" behind the slide. I rushed him to the bathroom only to find that he already gone in his shorts. I did the best I could to clean him and his shorts with dry, cheap public bathroom toilet paper while he simultaneously tee teed on the back of the toilet. I announced that we were going home and on the way out he stepped in poop that undoubtedly dropped out of his shorts unnoticed on the way to bathroom. Sorry for nonparents out there who made it through this post. It was too funny/horrifying not to share.

Baby Bev #2 is due in January. Patrick and I are very excited. Mac doesn't quite get it yet. He did not go to the first ultrasound last week with us but when we go again in 3 weeks we'll bring him along to see baby brother/sister.

Progressive Vacation 2011

We spent a few days down in Sandestin at my Granny's condo on the golf course at Seascape. Mac LOVED the ocean water and sand this year. He didn't want to leave the water! We started calling Mac "Beach Mac" because he stayed in such a good mood while we were there. On the last day we were there, after we packed everything up we went west down 98 and over the bridge to Navarre Beach where my Granny, aunt, uncle, and cousins were. Then we were off to spend a night at Compass Lake (my parent's place) with Gabe, Jaime, and kids. The next morning we went back into AL to Lake Martin to spend the 4th of July with my Dad's brother and family. It was a great vacation. We even convinced Krystal to come down for a day and bring her 7 month old Jack. It was his first time ever to travel and spend the night away from home, but he did pretty good! I won't go into detail but I am happy to say that Mac has successfully gone #2 in the potty 3 times since yesterday. We began this potty training journey about 1 month ago and he's just starting to be more aware of the other end. I hope the success continues!

The "Waci"

The pacifier (aka "waci") has been a big part of Mac's life since about his 2nd day of life. We went into the hospital with the idea that we would not let him have one (for fear of it interrupting his nursing skills). But after he came back from the nursery early one morning with one in his mouth, we decided to just go with it. It has saved us in SO many situations, starting before we even took him home from the hospital. It came in handy to calm him down enough to nurse (for the few days I was able to), it bought us time to get a bottle ready, and soothed him in countless other situations. Over the years we limited his time with his "waci", first by limiting it to sleep time and car rides only, then we gave it to him just when he was sleeping.

We decided now was just a good a time as any to go ahead and take the waci away so we snuck into his room one day and cut a hole in it (knowing he wouldn't want to suck on it like that). When it came time for his nap, he didn't want it so Patrick told him it was broken and he should go throw it away, and he did. So that night we were nervous of course that there would be a crying fit and sleepless night. Nope! He whined a bit but then went right to sleep with his new lion and bear in arm. Go Mac!

Potty Training Moms...

I have tried a few different products in this whole potty training adventure and I thought I'd share with you potty training moms out there which ones (I think) work the best...

Fisher Price- Precious Planet Froggy Friend Potty
Very easy for him to quickly plop down on & the high front portion decreases splashing & spilling. I wish I had two!

Mommy's Helper- Contoured Potty Seat
He likes the soft cushion and the opening is bigger than some other potty seats. If the opening is too small then the "gun" has a harder time aiming inside the potty. I LOVE the ring and hook storage option; keeps everything more sanitary.

Gerber- Training Pants
I consider these a step in between pull ups and underwear. They are much more soft than regular underwear and have a little more absorbency to save you from puddles on your floor.

*All of these products can be found at your friendly neighborhood Walmart.

Mac could care less about wet or dirty diapers or using the potty so I had to try something to jump start this potty training thing...

My strategy? nakedness, multiple potty locations, lots of time outside, and cookies!

DAY ONE (surprisingly successful!)
Stats: 5 hits, 2 misses

DAY TWO (not so successfull)
Stats: 1 hit, 4 misses
We had company so he had to wear his pull ups more.

DAY THREE (semi successful)
Stats: 3 hits, 4 misses

DAY FOUR (successful)
Stats: 4 hits, 2 misses

DAY FIVE (successful)
Stats: 5 hits, 3 misses

His main challenges have been patience sitting on the big potty multiple times a day and pulling underwear down. Being naked at home has helped that, but I know that will be another learning curve once he starts to go to the potty by himself.

He goes back to daycare in a few days so hopefully he'll have upped his game some since he will actually have to wear underwear and pants :). I am very proud of him though!

It was such a beautiful day today. We started off the day watching Spain Park play in Pell City (they won!). Mac got to see his Meme and Papa and cousin Tre. They had such a fun time playing together. I didn't bring my camera unfortunately. After the game we ate at Cracker Barrel. Later on that day we went out to Gabe and Jaime's to eat supper and had a great time playing outside. Luckily my sis in law is a great picture taker and has a great camera.

Couponing. I have some friends that are experts at this and save so much $. I feel guilty not doing it. I have a SoutherSavers tutorial video on pause right now...

Exercising. I am not even going to go into this explanation b/c it just makes me mad at myself...

One week later...
I have decided I will probably never be a master coupon user, but I have used a few coupons and saved a few bucks since this original post. I think I'll stick to saving $ just by shoppig Big Lots and Walmart, buying off brands, and using the occasional manufacturer's coupon thanks :).

Also, I have gone to the gym twice since last week! Boo yeah! I tried the first workout of "Couch to 5k" just to see how I liked it. It was actually tolerable.

Lazy days are fun, but after a productive day like today, I always feel great. Here's what I got done today...

Organized my clothes in my closet, moved older/tighter clothes to another closet.
Grouped together Sunday outfits to decrease my getting ready time. Sundays can be a tad chaotic when getting ready for church.
Reorganized guest room closet.
Helped Patrick install shelves in Mac's room.
Put new bulbs in our bedroom fan light.
Vacuumed living room rug.
Washed dishes.

What Not to Wear

I felt like I was wearing the same few outfits for church each Sunday, and I never could remember which grey pants are the ones that are way too tight and which ones fit just right so.... I had my own private episode of What Not to Wear!

I threw all my skirts and pants onto the bed and tried on every one of them. I'm sad to say that 60% of them went into the "way too tight" pile. I didn't throw them into a big aluminum trash can like on the show ; I will store them away for a day when I have shed some unwanted pounds.

You should try doing this in your own closet. Here are the pros and cons...

Pros: cuts down on your time getting ready, reminds you of clothes you forgot you had, creates some much needed space for those of you with small closets like me, gives you a chance to donate some items

Con: the fact that you USED to fit in most of those clothes, but not anymore.

I am 28 today. I can't believe how fast 1 year can go by! I was feeling a little bummed about having to wake up early and head into work, but God met with me in the car and really blessed my heart. He made me realize how blessed I am and how much I am loved. Thank you everyone who has called, text, or posted on my facebook wall. It is a simple thing to say "happy birthday" but you have really made me happy today.

We celebrated Christmas with Patrick's family on Saturday since we'll be in Dothan for Christmas day. MeMe and PaPa gave Mac and Tre a John Deer tractor for their big gift. They were a huge hit.

Once again the santa at the Summit was wonderful, and there was barely a line! Mac was leaning half way off of Santa's lap the whole time, but he didn't cry! After he got his picture made, we walked over to The Tavern at the Summit and had lunch. Wonderful day. Naps afterward would have completed it, but I guess that was asking too much ;).

New Tradition

Patrick had a great idea of starting a Beverly family Christmas tradition of watching The Polar Express. We started this last year but watched it while Mac was in bed. Last night after eating dinner, I gave Mac a bath and got his PJs on him while Patrick cleaned up the kitchen. Then we all went upstairs and watched the movie. Mac cuddled up with me then Patrick and barely made it through the movie. He was mesmerized and so were we. It was so simple, but a very special night spent with our little family of 3.

If you have never seen The Polar Express, I would highly recommend that you watch it!

We thought that Mac would sleep a little later since he stayed up later, but he was up and at 'em at his normal time of 5:15 this morning. He has learned to turn on his light (by stepping up on his little chair) so he usually plays for a few minutes in there before he decides it's time for his parents to be up too. He also likes to crawl behind his bed to try and retrieve his pacifier and has gotten stuck back there the past 2 mornings. I keep hoping this is just a phase because he's never gotten up this early before. I'm afraid my child is just going to be a perpetual early riser...

I love love love this child, but sometimes us moms need some "ME" time.

Today of course I will do some clothes folding, dish washing, de cluttering, weekend packing, etc. BUT I will enjoy being the only human being in the house:) I'll pick Mr. McCay up at 2:30 and take him to get that crazy head of hair cut and then when Patrick gets home, we're off to Brundidge (for a weekend of hunting with Dad). I'll drop him off and then head another 45 minutes south to Dothan to be with Mom.

PS--Did you know that TLC has a new show called Bama Belles that is based on women in Dothan??!! Wow! It starts Dec. 5th. I know I'll be watching it.

croup

croup 1 |kroōp|nouninflammation of the larynx and trachea in children, associated with infection and causing breathing difficulties.

After learning about croup in nursing school and recently been refreshed on the subject to renew my PALS license, I can finally say I understand what it is. I've always heard the term "croup" and "croupy" but now I know all too well.

Friday night (when it started kicking in): We were a sight in Mac's little bathroom all steamed up and sweating while the 3 of us breathed in the hot air, sang, danced, read books and played with the busy ball popper. Then we bundled up and went outside for a walk in the cool air. All of these crazy sounding things were advice of a pediatric nurse I promise haha. The hot air loosens up the airway and the cool air decreases the inflammation which causes the classic "barking cough". After much debate in my head, I decided not to go to the ER and let him try to sleep through the night with the humidifier in his room. His breathing was a little noisy, but he slept peacefully through the night.

Saturday: We took him to the Children's after hours clinic thanks to the referral from his doctor's nurse. They gave him some oral Decadron (sterioid to decrease the inflammation). And the doctor said his lungs sounded good (no stridor today thank goodness).

Thankfully he still acts like he feels good and is down for a nap now. He learned a new phrase today, "What was that?!" It is so cute hearing him say it with his little hoarse voice.

Materialism

Why is that (for most) our nature is to want more more more?! I have a beautiful new house and many nice things, but for some reason I am left wanting more. Like: a bigger master closet, a nicer back porch, more counter space, a car with 0 dings on it, more clothes, a skinnier body, etc etc etc. God has blessed with me SO many nice things, not to mention my family and health. Does anyone else feel the same?

Putting all selfish desires aside for a moment, THANK YOU LORD.

Fun fact: according to a height predictor on babycenter.com, he'll be 6' by his senior year of high school. Wouldn't that be great?!

According to Dr. Israel, Mac's doing very well on everything except his speech. Because he understands what we're saying and follows commands, she said he'll probably pick up on his language skills during the next 6 months. If not, we'll reevaluate and maybe schedule some speech therapy. I think he'll improve a lot over the next few months though.
